Administration of regular medication and nursing services at state schools:
The administration of regular medication and other nursing interventions are offered to students at state schools in Malta and Gozo on a daily basis.
These services include:
- The administration of oral medication as prescribed by the physician.
- The monitoring of blood glucose levels and, when necessary, the administration of insulin to students suffering from diabetes.
- Nursing interventions such as urethral (and suprapubic) catheterisation and medications, Ryle’s tube feeding, PEG (percutaneous endoscope gastrostomy) tube feeding, cleaning and changing of colostomy and ileostomy bags.
The nurses, who are provided by a service provider, will be present on mainstream school premises at the time when the administration of the medicine or the treatment is needed, as prescribed by students’ physicians. The Resource Centres however are provided with a nurse during the whole school hours.
Parents who require these services for their children during school hours are to request an application form from the head of school. The parents are to fill in the details of the student and the student’s physician will fill in the details of the medications/treatment required. The form is then returned to the head of school.
